Alessandro Alviani: What Prompt Editors Do at Ippen Digital
Munich-based publisher Ippen Digital has employed an AI prompt editor since summer 2023. Alessandro Alviani, Product Lead NLP (Natural Language Processing), explains what the collaboration looks like.
What does an AI prompt editor do at Ippen Digital?
Alessandro Alviani: Our prompter works in the large AI team. Her tasks include the further development and optimization of prompts in collaboration with the various editorial teams. We test many different use cases. The aim is to create standardized prompts that can be used in a targeted manner without further adjustments in the CMS in order to lower the usability barrier.
How do the AI teams work together with the editors?
Alviani: We work closely together, the boundaries are fluid. Many editors sit in on our AI teams. They test use cases, provide direct feedback and help us to optimize our prompts, among other things. We regularly share our experiences of using them. All of this improves the prompts and helps in our day-to-day work.
What do prompters need to be able to do?
Alviani: On the one hand, you need to have curiosity and mental flexibility and creativity – problem-solving, basically. Prompters also need basic knowledge of programming. The most important thing, however, is an editorial background - in other words, an understanding of basic and guiding journalistic principles, such as citation rules.
What is the biggest task when working with prompts and their results?
Alviani: Creating an understanding of where the limits of the tools lie. We really want our colleagues to have a realistic view of the tools – what they can and cannot do - and to recognize potential dangers. Because you always need a human review of the final results.
